Earlier in 2003 Atlantic Beach Potters held a workshop featuring Tomio Fujita, a ninth generation potter from Echizen , Japan. He spent four days at out studio giving a hands on workshop in the technique of hand building pots in the Wazumi way. It was very fun and informative. He also threw a few pots on the wheel the last day. Most of his pots are fired in a wood fired kiln. For more info, please visit www.atlanticpotterysupply.com.

Tomio Fujuita making a coil pot the traditional "Wazumi" way

Tomio measures the pot.

Round and round....backwards.

Tomio shapes the coil and side.

Bigger and bigger it gets.

Chris Kelly assists in making coils for the pot.

Still more coils.

It is getting bigger.

That is a pretty big pot!

He works both sides of the wall.

The shoulder of the pot is being formed.

Adding more of the shoulder.

This will soon be formed to complete the shoulder.

Starting the rim now.

Working the rim up a bit.

He shapes and smoothes the rim with a wet cloth while walking backwards.
