My name is Chris Jones, and I have been working in pottery for about 17
years. I began my career in pottery by taking several art courses at
Valencia Community College in 1991. My professor was Michael Galetta, an
extremely talented and creative man. There I learned basic hand building,
and simple wheel throwing techniques as well as glazing and kiln firing.
From work I produced at school, I was found by a local
potter, John Margerum, who was looking for an apprentice. He is a very
talented production/studio potter who showed me the everyday life of a
potter. While training in his studio, I learned every facet of pottery
production from wheel throwing to gas and electric kiln firing. To sell our
wares we traveled the Eastern US and mostly Florida setting up at art shows
almost every weekend. It was a great time and I met many fantastic people
everywhere I went.
These experiences made me determined to pursue pottery as
a way of living. I have never found anything so fulfilling. There is
something special about creating something beautiful
from
raw earth! After working for John for just about a year (the first of three
periods at his pottery), I moved to Amelia Island, FL where I enrolled at
FCCJ. There I took two more wheel throwing classes to help sharpen my
skills. I am currently one of three resident potters at
Atlantic Beach Potters
where I am broadening my skills and have the facilities to explore the clay
medium. I attend art festivals all around Florida as well as the Southeast
U.S.
I sometimes exhibit at fine art
and craft shows around Florida, as well as have work in several
galleries. If you would like to e-mail me, you can do so at
